Joan Peterson is the author of the compact and portable EAT SMART series of culinary guidebooks, the first of their kind. They are written for travelers and cookbook lovers like herself who want to get to the heart of a country's culture through its cuisine. The author, recognizing that feeding the traveler's body is as important as feeding the soul, thoroughly educates the palate, eliminating any guess work that could muddy the chances of a mouth-watering experience. To date she has written guides to the cuisines of Brazil, Turkey, Indonesia, Mexico, Poland, and now Morocco. She has traveled extensively for many years, and has led tours to the Pacific Rim, the Caribbean, Europe and Australia, along with her husband, David. In addition to writing about food, she conducts food demonstrations, lectures on foreign cuisines and leads culinary tours. Joan is also coordinator for the Travel Publishers Association.

Praise for books in the popular EAT SMART series
Eat Smart in Poland treats its subject with depth usually reserved for a college course. Beginning with the basic geography in 4000 B.C.E. and moving to the present, it covers every aspect of Polish cuisine….the comprehensive blend of the esoteric and ordinary, the sophisticated and earthy, make this the perfect reference tool for collections that emphasize travel and gastronomy.
~ Library Journal, July 2000

[Eat Smart in Brazil] adds ¡Ole! to the kitchen. The history of Brazilian cuisine, descriptions of regional foods, a detailed menu dictionary, a glossary of ingredients, a phrase book, a guide to markets and a handful of recipes are packed into this paperback, which should be useful for the traveler, actual or armchair.
~ Florence Fabricant, The New York Times

Exemplary among the offerings is the Eat Smart series from Ginkgo Press. To date, Joan and David Peterson have completed four-color guidebooks with recipes to the cuisines and eating customs of Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, Poland, and Turkey. After journeys to more than 70 countries, the Wisconsin couple realized the integral role food played in their travels so they began researching the unique culinary characteristics of each country they planned to visit. Eat Smart in Morocco is next.
~ ForeWord magazine, Fall 2001

To know whereof you speak, you must first know of what you eat. Eat Smart in Poland is a remarkably researched guide to Polish food.…Joan and David Peterson thoroughly educate your palate—eliminating any guesswork that could muddy the chances of a mouth-watering experience. Mindful of regional cooking traditions, variations in style and presentation, as well as customs surrounding mealtime, the Petersons immerse the reader in all things food-related. ‘To capture the essence of a country through its food’ is the authors’ noble goal, and via this book Poland appears to be one dumpling of a country.
~ Cyns Nelson, The Bloomsbury Review, May/June 2000

The authors have written a series of Eat Smart books that no traveler to foreign countries should be without. Each book covers a separate country—Eat Smart in Turkey, Eat Smart in Brazil, Eat Smart in Indonesia and Eat Smart in Mexico—and is chock full of information that you won’t find elsewhere within the covers of one easy-to-carry paperback. These books are well researched, accurate and very informative. Highly recommended.
~ Sharon Hudgins, editor, Chile Pepper magazine

With the fourth title in their Eat Smart series, the Petersons have assembled a guide to the food of Mexico for travelers. Their book is organized into eight sections. At its heart is an extensive menu guide and a food and flavors guide,…the authors include an informative and extensive history of the cuisine; a second on regional foods; a very brief chapter on shopping in Mexican food markets…and a handy guide to helpful phrases. Highly recommended for all public libraries.
~ Library Journal

Recognizing that feeding the traveler’s body is as important as feeding the soul, Joan and David Peterson have written the fifth book in their series, Eat Smart in Poland. …Combining historical background with practical information, the Petersons offer tips on navigating menus, shopping in local markets and learning about regional specialties. Recipes are also included.
~ Trips Magazine

This new book teaches you how to ‘Eat Smart in Poland’…contains what is probably the longest list of Polish foods and culinary terms ever translated into English..…The book reflects an appreciation for Poland’s culture and cuisine and a sensitivity to the values and preferences of the Polish people that is truly amazing if we consider that not a single drop of Polish blood flows in the authors’ veins.…a must for travelers and food hobbyists.”
~ Robert Strybel, Polish American Journal, June 2000

The World Tourism Organization says that Poland is now the fifth most popular travel destination in Europe. So it is not surprising that the Petersons have added Eat Smart in Poland to their series of food lovers’ travel guides…It explains how much more there is to Polish cuisine than kielbasa and pierogis, introducing readers to eggnog vodka and ryemeal soup, for example, among other delicacies.
