FOOD & DRINK - The Corner Table podcast: Eat Smart
By: Lindsay Christians | The Capital Times
In the early 1990s, Joan Peterson had tickets to Brazil, a spiral-bound notebook full of dishes to try and the idea that maybe, when she got back to Madison, she'd write a pamphlet.
That was 14 culinary travel guides and many tasting tours ago (a signature trip, to [Jordan], is set for November). Peterson, the writer and publisher of the Eat Smart guides through Gingko Press, has collaborated on guides to Denmark, Germany, Peru, Indonesia and more. Her most recent guide to Portugal written with Ronnie Hess was published last fall; a celebratory dinner of Portuguese wine and food is set for Thursday night at VomFass on University Avenue.
This week on the podcast, Joan and her daughter, Eat Smart illustrator and marketer Susan Chwae, talk about how each 160 page travel guide comes together. Joan also shares how, in Morocco, the savvy traveler takes the bull by the horns.

Eating smart, from Madison to Portugal
By: Doug Moe
For Marcel Proust, it was the memory of a spongy cookie--a madeleine—that launched the French author’s masterpiece, “Remembrance of Things Past.”
For Joan Peterson, it was an extraordinary custard tart.
Twenty-five years ago, Peterson founded Ginkgo Press in Madison, and there are now 14 country-specific titles in her “Eat Smart” guidebook series, which began with “Eat Smart in Brazil” in 1993. Click to read more.

Tasting trip: Eat Smart Culinary Travel launches new tour to Jordan
BY ALLISON GEYER
To Joan Peterson and Susan Chwae, the mother-daughter team behind Madison-based food tourism company Eat Smart Culinary Travel, the best way to understand and experience a different culture is by tasting it.
“Food is like a common language,” says Peterson, who launched Ginkgo Press in 1993 to publish educational guide books about the cuisines of different countries. Initially she and her husband traveled the globe conducting culinary research for the books, and eventually they decided it would be fun to lead a tour. Click to Read More
